The Rhetorics of Healing

Exploring the rhetoric of the terms “healing”, “cure”, “illness” and “disease”, we chose not to accept their definitions at face value, but believing them to take on specific meanings and practices, we asked scholars from all over the world to explore how they are used.  By keeping our questions intentionally vague, we attracted perspectives from across the spectrum of disciplines: biomedical ethics, classics, anthropology, comparative literature, economics, biblical studies and medicine.  All articles are copyrighted by the authors and presenters.

Rhetorics, Ethics and Moral Persuasion
A collaborative effort on the part of the editors of Queen and the conference organizers for the Heidelberg Conference in July 2002, the purpose of the conference was to bring together scholars who work from the perspective of rhetorical analysis and ask them to reflect upon concepts of “ethos” and “ethics” with respect to Hellenistic moral philosophy.

Rhetoric, Violence & Evil: Connections, Reflections and Responses

The conference was held in January 2004 and was an intense discussion of the nature of evil, violence and their connection with rhetoric (often a discipline associated with manipulation and amorality). Disciplinary contributions came from fields as diverse as biblical studies, rhetorical theory, cultural history, religious history, culture criticism and philosophy.

Rhetorics of Identity: Place, Race, Sex and the Person
