Rhetorics of Social Formation

University of Redlands, Redlands, CA
19 - 20 January 2007

The Centre for Rhetorics & Hermeneutics and the New Testament Rhetoric Project of the Institute for Antiquity and Christianity is pleased to announce Rhetorics of Social Formation, the sixth in a series of successful international conferences exploring rhetorical theory in the context of pressing public issues.

This conference will examine the role of rhetoric in creating, elaborating, and sustaining social formation and small group communication.

In the past we have had presenters from Australia, Botswana, Canada, Columbia, France, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, South Africa, and the USA. As in the past, we strongly encourage foreign scholars to continue to submit proposals.

Proposals should be no more than 500 words long, and must include identification of institutional affiliation of the applicant, or, in the case of independent scholars, a brief resume. (Those submitting a proposal for the first time should also include a brief resume.)

Proposals are due to the organizers no later than 1 June 2006. Those selected will be notified by 15 May 2006. As has been true for past conferences, former participants will be given priority when the final selection of papers is made.

Participants are expected to submit final drafts of their papers by no later than 15 December 2006. Papers will be posted on both the ars-rhetorica and rhetjournal.net websites. Participants agree to read the papers before the conference and come prepared to discuss them. Presenters will be given 10 minutes to review the major contentions of the paper; 45 minutes will be devoted to discussion. A total of 20 papers may be selected for presentation.

Registration is free, but transportation, lodging and food must be covered by the participants themselves. Regrettably, there are no funds for travel grants, etc.

Any questions can be directed to David Hester and/or Jim Hester. We look forward to hearing from you.
